Roanoke Island, Outer Banks NC

June 2016

Leo and I have been planning a trip to Roanoke Island for a while. When we bought our RV in April this was the first trip we had in mind. This is a beautiful seaside town with lots of historic attractions , I’ll go into that later. But first things first, I must say we are getting much better at this RV thing. It took us no time at all to set up in this gorgeous RV park and as you can see from the picture the view is spectacular.

The town of Manteo is very bike friendly which gave us a great opportunity to use our bikes. We toured the town and admired all of the beautiful late 19th century and early 20th century houses from what was then a busy fishing village. Along the way we also stopped in Fort Raleigh and toured this unique state park which is also where The Lost Colony play is performed all summer long. This play is the longest continuously running play in the US.

We attended the ” Lost Colony” play on a beautiful starry night. We were ready with bug spray but lucky for us no bug problems that evening. The play was delightful we enjoyed the story telling and beautiful voices. It was a great experience. One of the must do things in the outer banks is visiting Corolla to see the wild horses. These horses originated from the Spanish gallons that ran aground on the treacherous Carolina Coast. Now they roam the beaches of Corolla and they are a beautiful sight to behold. We drove out jeep about 10 miles on the beach to see them, this area is only accessible to four wheel vehicles.

We had so much fun, exploring the Outer Banks from Corolla to Ocracoke island, this is a part of North Carolina that we will return to time and time again.
